Lighting Director Exercise

 Chapter 3: Lighting Director Exercise

Question: You are to supervise the lighting of a face cream commercial. The script calls for an ECU of the model’s face. The novice LD (Lighting Director) suggests using a fast falloff “to accentuate the nice bone structure of the model’s face.” Do you agree with the LD? If so, why? If not, why?

Answer: The novice lighting director is clearly wrong in this case. Fast falloff accentuates wrinkles, ridges, and hollows in the face. That’s the opposite direction you would want to take in the case of a face cream commercial. What you want is Flat lighting. You’re looking to place emphasis on the smoothness of the women’s face, showing how effective this skin cream is. Slow falloff or no fall off at all produces this result. The thematic and emotional functions can also be of benefit. Flat Lighting suggests cleanliness (perfect for a facial cream) and efficiency. It also serves to expresses energy and enthusiasm.

Below would be a good setup for the ECU shots. You want to use highly diffused light. Both the key light and the fill light would use highly diffused soft light, and the back light serves to separate the model for the background.
